Frequently Asked Questions

What is the CUSA Crew SC “one club fee” and why do we have it?
The “one club fee” is an all-inclusive single player fee that covers costs for the entire calendar year to include soccer programming in summer, fall, winter and spring.

There are a number of reasons why we use a single “one club fee.”

  1. Increases the club’s ability to maximize the development of our players through more consistent participation in each soccer programming activity, to conduct long-range planning and execute high-quality soccer programming.
  2. Removes the burden of our families having to pay separately in a nickel-and-dime fashion for each and every activity throughout the year.
  3. Removes the (sometimes uncomfortable and awkward) burden placed on our volunteer team managers for collecting coaching fees and expenses from fellow parents.
  4. Reduces the administrative burden associated with fee collection so that the club can focus more time and resources on player development.

What specifically is included in the “one club fee”?

  • The full-time professional soccer staff, led by the Director of Operations and the Directors of Coaching focused on driving an innovative and effective development program:

How does the “one club fee” compare to fees charged by other local clubs?
The CUSA Crew SC “one club fee” is on par with, or in most cases significantly less than, the aggregated fees required to play for the other local competitive soccer clubs.  Most clubs itemize player fees, coaching fees, extra training and other costs, such that when you see just the “player fee” advertised it misrepresents the actual cost to play in the club for the year.  CUSA Crew SC “one club fee” includes all those elements in a clear and upfront manner, and includes more soccer programming value for that equivalent cost.

No other local club can deliver the value CUSA Crew SC can provide with its exclusive and comprehensive affiliate partnership with the Columbus Crew SC professional Major League Soccer organization.

Will my team have a professional or parent coach for the season?
For the U9-U19 age groups, your team will have professional trainers and a professional head coach.  For the CUSA Crew SC Youth Academy (U6-U8), there are no “Head Coaches” since the program is less team-based and managed more as age-group cohorts.  The Youth Academy is directly managed by our professional Directors of Coaching who will use a mix of professional trainers and parent coaches to execute the program.

What is the difference between a professional and parent coach?
A professional coach is a staff member who is compensated for his / her expertise. These individuals are employees of the club who are hand-picked for their extensive soccer backgrounds.  These individuals are licensed and are required to pursue continuing education opportunities provided by the club through US Soccer and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.  We expect to promote from within and rely on our professional coaches to help us identify candidates for future openings within the club.

A parent coach is a fully qualified individual who has agreed to volunteer their time to the betterment of the players and the program. Typically, the child of the parent coach is on the team.  The parent coaches receive the same support as our professional coaching staff.

Why does CUSA Crew SC have professional head coaches at all age groups?
The CUSA Crew SC is implementing a comprehensive and innovative curriculum from the Columbus Crew Youth Development System that requires a consistent and methodical application to maximize development as players transition from the Youth Academy at the youngest ages to the high school program at the oldest ages.  In order to effectively implement the curriculum, and other policies aimed at growing our players (e.g., rotating head coaches every two years to ensure players are exposed to different coaching styles), having professional coaches at each age group is the optimal strategy.  This approach also ensures that our evaluation of players is as objective and performance-based as possible.

CUSA Crew SC highly values our parent assistant coaches and Youth Academy Coaches, many of whom have extensive soccer playing and coaching experience.  The club expects to continue leveraging that expertise in the CUSA Crew SC Youth Academy and as assistant coaches in all age groups where appropriate. In some cases, as mentioned above, we have recruited some of these highly qualified parents with coaching licenses to become professional head coaches within the club.

How is it possible for CUSA Crew SC to provide so much soccer programming content and value, and with a high-level staff, for an equivalent or lower “one club fee” when other clubs are not able to do that?
The CUSA Crew SC organization is subsidized and supported by a highly successful MEAD CUSA Cup tournament that is put on each fall over Labor Day weekend that reinvests in player development and to reduce club fees.

Do you have policies that cover payment plans, discounts, refunds and financial assistance?
Yes, please see below for a summary of these policies.

Fee Payment Policy

  • Players may elect to pay their fees in full at the time of registration or at any time prior to the start of the season, or through a payment plan.

  • For players electing to pay their fees via the payment plan:

    • A $20 processing fee will apply, $5 per monthly payment.

    • The first installment (“deposit”) is due at the time of registration following try-outs when the player accepts his or her position on a team.

      • Note:  Team assignment offers will typically be made within 48 hours of the last try-out date for each age group (click here for try-out dates).  We ask that each player accept or decline a team assignment offer within 48 hours of it being made so that the club can quickly make any necessary adjustments and finalize team rosters.

    • For the U9 to U15 (8th Grader) age groups, each of four equal payments are subsequently due on August 1st, September 1st, October 1st, and November 1st

    • For the High School U15 (9th Grader) to U19 age groups each of four equal payments are subsequently due on November 1st, December 1st, January 1st, and February 1st.

  • Under extenuating circumstances or conditions not directly covered by this policy, the Directors, while consulting all necessary parties, will consider and disposition requests for deviation on a case-by-case basis when the request is made in writing.

Discount Policy

  • Families with multiple children who have registered them all by August 1 will receive the following discounts:

    • 2nd Child:  $100 discount for that child*

    • 3rd Child:  $200 discount for that child*

    • 4th Child:  $300 discount for that child*

    • 5th Child and Beyond:  $400 discount for each of those children*

                   * $25 discount for Youth Academy players

Refund Policy

  • Upon accepting an offer to join a CUSA Crew SC team, it’s expected that a player is committing for the full year. Once rosters are set, each team is subject to certain expenses that cannot be recouped should a player later withdraw from the team. As such, leaving the team can negatively impact the remaining players both financially and competitively. Players and families are expected to give serious consideration to this commitment before accepting an offer.

  • Once a player has accepted an offer and paid the deposit, there will be no refund issued.

  • Under extenuating circumstances or conditions not directly covered by this policy, the Director of Operations while consulting all necessary parties will consider refund requests submitted in writing on a case-by-case basis.  Any decision made to return a portion of fees paid will not include the initial deposit as that is non-refundable

  • Click here to request a refund.

Financial Assistance Policy

  • The CUSA Crew SC make every effort to assist families with significant financial hardship so that their child can continue to play soccer.

  • A limited number of scholarships are awarded annually and they tend to be partial scholarships in exchange for volunteer service back to the club.

  • In order to be considered for a scholarship, an application must be completed and returned after accepting placement on a team, registering and paying the deposit.

  • To apply for a scholarship, please provide a detailed explanation of the reasons for your request (one form for each player) with supporting documentation that clearly demonstrates the need (e.g., W-2 or tax returns).  All submissions will be reviewed by the Director of Operations in conjunction with the Club financial staff. As part of the evaluation process, a request may be made for additional supporting information and documentation.

  • The scholarship process is confidential.  Scholarship requests must be received by July 1st for consideration for the upcoming season.

  • Click here for Scholarship Application.

  • Click here to submit your application.

Late / Delinquent Payment Policy

  • Every effort will be made to keep players on the field; however, in those cases where a family has not honored the standard fee payment plan, or a modified fee payment plan developed as part of a financial assistance package, the following procedures will apply:

    • Payments more than 7 days late (whether due to lack of payment, bounced checks, declined debit or credit payments, or any other reason) results in an e-mail or phone call to you as a reminder. The player’s coach will also be notified at this time. A $25 fee will be charged and added to the player balance at this time.

    • Payments more than 15 days late will result in suspension of the player’s playing privileges.  Once payment is made and the account is up to date, the playing privileges will be reinstated.
